The Edward Tomlinson Memorial Prize

The Edward Tomlinson Memorial Prize is awarded to the Best Individual Speaker, with a prize worth £50 in book tokens.

This prize was established in memory of Edward Tomlinson, who tragically died on a post-degree gap visit to Lebanon in April 2006.

Eddie was himself a keen debater. He represented Hereford Cathedral School in the final stages of both the Oxford and Cambridge Union competitions in 2000. Subsequently at Oxford, he debated for the university and helped judge the Schools competition.

When he became President of the Oxford Union (in Hilary Term 2004), one of his concerns was to give every opportunity to undergraduates to test their wits with and against eminent guests speakers in the debating chamber.

We are extremely grateful to the family and friends of Edward Tomlinson for establishing this prize in his memory and to Laura Poots (President, Hilary 2005) for facilitating this with us for Finals' Day 2023.
